Style Essentials 2: The Leather Jacket

The Biker Lady
Leather biker jackets are a classic. Whether your style is rock or ladylike, you can find the biker jacket just for you.

DOs
  • Material: soft, supple leather. Denim and other cotton fabrics. Stay away from rigid, shiny leather that obviously creases and even cracks when you squeeze it.
  • Minimum embellishment. Obviously, a biker jacket is not "biker" unless it has a minimum of zippers, grommets and studs.
  • An unexpected colour or print.
  • Pencil skirts, straight trousers.
  • Court shoes, booties.

DONTs
  • Oversized, boyfriend-stolen/borrowed, unless you are young or extremely slim. Tailored and fitted is better.
  • Full skirts, especially with gathered material at the waist, unless the leather jacket is extremely light and ends at the waist.
  • Go overboard with studs, grommets and other hardware store suspects, especially if you are a Body type C.
  • Biker boots, unless you are the real thing.

Week 7: Biker Lady

Week 8: Biker Lady by Caroline Grant. You can leave it to me... I take a biker anything and make a ladylike set. I know, I know, but that's my style.  [Background image: Butterfly Ray, by Adam Summers. You can see his art here and learn more about this type of photography here.]
A white biker jacket creates a nice neckline that will elongate your neck without creating too much volume, in contrast with the traditional collar, not the best option for those with thick necks. The back is fitted with side seams that create very flattering lines. Embellishment is limited to two exposed zippers in gold.
The crisp white and blue with touches of emerald green and red clearly all point to spring. Notice how the colours are distributed: green is at the top and bottom, red is at the top, but twice (thrice, if you count the nails). There are two different prints in white and blue: the abstract one in the skirt, and the graphic one in the handbag. You can mix prints in the same colours.
I admit, the jockey cup is much too warm for the ensemble but the colours were just wonderful. Think same shape in a different material for spring instead .
