The Almighty Unbroken Line

The Almighty Unbroken Line

Everybody, except the Tall and slim, should always try to create the longest, leaner line when getting dressed. This is what Kendall Farr calls the "almighty unbroken line" (AUL from now onwards).
How to achieve it:

1. Look for monochromatic and tonal colour combinations. You can achieve this result through wearing the same colour in top and bottom or wearing a dress or a jumpsuit.

Monochromatic

The vertical line created by the jumpsuit is multiplied by the jacket and the scarf hanging around your neck, effectively cutting your middle in as many parts. If you are petite, beware of wearing scarves that fall below your waist, they will shorten you, pointing to the ground.

Tonal Combination

The play on greens creates a tonal colour combination that results in a long unbroken line. A great way to wear many shades of the same colour is mixing textures and prints.
The pencil trousers are best for those slim, or average body type Cs. If you are heavy on top, beware of creating and ice cream cone effect: opt for a pair of straight-cut trousers instead.
The shoes are Hispanitas, comfortable and splendid quality every season.

Cardigan Jacket

The lilac pendant and gloves are a nice detail in a very sober combination of winter colours, although there is some shine and texture in the outfit.
The cardigan jacket's pattern creates interesting shapes: first, there are two black vertical lines, drawing the eye up and down, then there are the diagonal lines created by how the garment hangs.
The boots are probably impossible to wear for those who cannot take 3.5" heels. but I liked the tassel detail. I guess I can add some to mine...

2. Colour blocking. The idea is to create vertical lines through blocks of colours and avoid horizontal ones, that will cut your silhouette in half (or three, four parts). Also, any horizontal lines creating through colour or pattern at a critical point (muffin top, saddlebags), will visually widen it.
Horizontal lines created through cut will result in the same: cuffed trousers, for instance will shorten your legs, so they are only a good option for Tall women. Capri trousers will do the same thing unless you have slim legs or wear at least a 2" heel.

Strategic Colourblocking

Strategic Colourblocking by Caroline Grant. [Style: Ladylike with a Twist.] Although this is a Long Tall Sally dress (a shop specialized in Tall ladies) and the idea of creating vertical colour blocking may not seem the very best idea, let's imagine that the aim was to slim down the middle... A B&W with medium brown is a good colour combination for Deep Autumns. Deep Winters should stick to B&W and/or a pop of colour in their coat or jacket.
I just love the way the Chie Mihara shoes combine the three shades, plus the detail of the beige bow.
Etro does prints very well every season that are repeated in their custom jewellery in their shape, like in their SS2013 collection. In this case, the necklace creates an almost graphic print next to the colourblocking in B&W.
