Other names for Body type Cs are: triangle, pear shape, or A shape.

How to achieve it?

Not accentuating the width of their shoulders, choosing certain necklines and sleeves, and avoiding wide lapels.

Avoiding details or bulky materials on the bust completely in the case of medium busted Body type Cs, but sparingly in the case of small busted Body typs Cs, like breast pockets or vertical pleating in light fabrics.

With that in mind... What are Body type B's best dresses?
Tunic dress. This shape is great for a Body type C because her hips are narrow. Worn with flats or substantial heels, it hightlights her great legs.

Choosing deep V or U necklines.

Elongating the torso with thin belts and ribbon ties at the waist. This works well with both average and short-waisted type C women, and creates an illusion of more curves. A sash tied loosely at high hip works also well with dresses with a straight structure.

Choosing soft, draped fabrics like cotton, wool, or silk jersey, soft suede, or cotton sateen.

Avoiding detailing over her bust that adds volume and/or texture, like breast pockets, pleating, ruffles, because it can make the upper body look too busy. In general, the fuller a Body type C's bust is, the less detailing should be there.

Choose the right underwear under dresses, so her bra doesn't show when she moves and she gets no VPLs (which is can be an issue if her bottom is flat-ish), so she should double check in the case of dresses for work.

These are Body type Cs best dresses, the ones she should adapt to whatever is current: a pencil cut, a gored hemline, a certain sleeve treatment... with the caveats she knows.
Part 1: The cut

General rules for Body Type B:

A skimming fit rather a tight one works best.

Uncomplicated styles in all respects, like stitching, pockets, etc. The idea is to focus attention on your upper body, where all those details can be concentrated.

Other names for Body type Bs are: hourglass and even bombshell.

Cuts:

Flat front: low waist, skimming the hips, with a straight or full leg. The taller you are, the wider the leg you can wear gracefully.

Bootcut/Flared: a subtly flared hem to provide visual balance for your hips. As I have just mentioned, your actual optimal width depends on how tall you are, because the wider the cut, the shorter you will appear.

Cropped, capri: you will be looking for the same kind of cut as above, i.e. straight, balancing cut that is not snug around the thigh. Firm fabrics are the most flattering.

Shorts: simple detailing, skimming fit! How short can your shorts be? Shorts make legs look longer, but consider if you will be comfortable wearing that length (consider the context and how high they will rise when you sit down).

To widen the appearance of her upper body, balancing it with her lower body.

Other names for Body type As are: inverted triangle, pear shape, or A shape.

How to achieve it?

Creating an A-line.

Focusing attention on her upper body, choosing a cut with a fitted torso, where all the details will be concentrated: wide lapels, double breasted styles...

Creating the widest posible line for her shoulders, either through cut or pattern (within reason, of course). Consider adding a dolman shoulder pad to the coat. A tailor can sew one into the lining or attach it with a couple of stiches to a seam if the coat is unlined.

Consider your height and weight before choosing:

The length of the coat: coats worn at knee-length are universally flattering (it is OK to show part of the skirt or dress underneath), mid-calf options are easier on taller people.

A single- or double-breasted option: single-breasted coats are universally flattering, but double rows of buttons can be flattering if you have a slim torso and a B or smaller cup, because they can contribute to create vertical lines that are lengthening. That, however, depends on how much the buttons stand out from the fabric (medium size fabric covered buttons will not stand out in the same way big brass military-inspired buttons will do, for instance).

With that in mind... What are Body type A's best coats?
A-line. An A-line shape that starts below the arms, flaring slightly to accomodate wider hips is always the best option for Body type As.

Best coats for Body type A: A-line by Caroline Grant. I have chosen an A-line Hobbs coat in burgundy brown wool that is extremely flattering for Body type As because it has wide, short lapels, and other details that contribute to subtly balance a Body type A's upper and lower body: a series of horizontal seams and a double row of buttons . The cloche hat, the faux fur scarf and the vintage brooch further contribute to keeping the attention concentrated on the upper part of the body. Brown tights matching the leather details in the tweed pumps (always comfortable Söfft shoes) elongate and slim the leg. [Style: Urban Tweed].

Trench and military style. The detailing that makes for a military coat can be extremely flattering for a woman's figure: a vertical line created by a double row of buttons (although this depends on how far they are placed and how much the stand out from the fabric), wide lapels, epaulettes, storm flaps. When those details are concentrated on the upper part of the body, they are flattering for Body type As.

This Isabella Oliver trench coat has epaulettes, wide lapels and princess seams (the two panels at the sides of the coat that give the coat the A-line shape: notice that the central panel is straight, the lateral ones flare from high waist), perfect for a Body type A. The velvet tunic dress from Hobbs called my attention when it first got out because of the rich, sumptuous but at the same time slightly bohemian vibe it provides. I think a wider belt probably suits the richness and weight of the tunic better that the one provided with it. [Style: Urban Tweed].

Part 2: DOs and DONTs

DOs or what to look for in trousers for type A :

Waistband: minimal or no waistband that hits at the part where your upper and lower body meet.

Rise: avoid very high rise trousers, as they will accentuate the difference between your upper body and your hips. Also avoid very low rise trousers, as they will hit a wide area of your hips and, additionally, will make your legs look shorter. Trying trousers with different rises will help you learn which works best for you (i.e. the number of inches from your navel that suits you best).

Material: You are looking for materials that drape and flatter your bottom, like lightweight or superfine wools, or good quality blends of wool, also dark denim and firm cotton are good.

Patterns: go for no pattern at all or a very small one, always in matte or very low shine materials.

DONTs or what to avoid in trousers for type A :

Wide waistbands.

Rise: avoid very high rise trousers, as they will accentuate the difference between your upper body and your hips. Also avoid very low rise trousers, as they will hit a wide area of your hips and, additionally, will make your legs look shorter.

Pleats/Open darts. A big NO.

Material. It is important to avoid lightweight cottons and wimpy materials that will droop and crease over your curves and also stiff materials (no drape).

Patterns: avoid big patterns (opt for a very small to no pattern at all). Shiny materials are not a good idea either.

Pockets: no back pockets or minimal flap or slash pockets placed just below the waistband. Avoid cargo pockets at all costs, they will prolong the widest part of your hips and, additionally, make you look shorter.

Cuffs: avoid them unless you're tall, they shorten the figure.

Possible alterations:

Hem trousers to wear with at least 1 1/2 heel. Your legs will look longer and leaner, your bottom, smaller.

If you're going with cuffs, wear your trousers extra long (half and inch from the floor). If not, take them out if possible... or don't buy the trousers.

Stitch closed any slash hip pockets, as they will tend to open, and cut the extra material, if bulky (or employ a tailor, it's an easy enough alteration to make) to avoid unnecessary bulk on your bottom and/or or thighs.

Part 1: The cuts.

General rules for Body Type A:

A skimming fit rather a tight one works best.

Uncomplicated styles in all respects, like stitching, pockets, etc. The idea is to focus attention on your upper body, where all those details can be concentrated.

Other names for Body type As are: inverted triangle, pear shape, or A shape.

Cuts:

Straight: low waist, flat front, and a full, straight leg (read ease through hip and thigh).

Bootcut/Flared: a subtly flared hem to provide visual balance for your hips. The actual optimal width depends on how tall you are: the wider the cut, the shorter you will appear.

Cropped, capri: you will be looking for the same kind of cut as above, i.e. straight, balancing cut that is not snug around the thigh.

Shorts: it is best to avoid shorts altogether and go for skorts or Culottes in a solid colour, or straight to A-line skirts, either in knee-length or to the ankle. No pleats!

Best cuts

These are the best dresses for Body type A women:

Empire dress: a type of dress where the waistline is above the natural one, often just below the bust. The emphasis is on the upper part of the body, especially with an interesting décolletage (look for wide oval or V-neck at mid chest necklines), or with embellishments on the bodice (look for pleating, ruching, flounces, or horizontal trims). Empire dresses contribute to create the illusion of length that is especially good for Petite Body type As.

Wrap dress: a type of dress that creates a V-shaped neck and can be easily adjusted in the bust and then to the hips. Same characteristics as above in detailing and cut.

Specifics

Fluid fabrics, that can drape, but not cling (lightweight knits, for instance, would cling and reveal every detail of your undergarments), that are firm, but not stiff, and matte, not shiny.

An A-line skirt, that eases into a fuller shape smoothing over hips, bottom, and thighs.

Hemmed to knee length, to elongate the line of the body but not shortening the leg visually.

Solid colours or tonal patterns consistent in size and spacing (all over small or medium pattern).

Less or no detailing in the skirt of the dress. Anything creating a focus of attention is best reserved for the top. That means no appliqués, flounces, horizontal or oversized patterns.

Circle and semicircle: no waistband, in a fluid material. Both points are very important, unless you want to acquire tent-like proportions.

A-line: no waistband, or a small waistband worn at natural to low waist.

Wrap: soft diagonal drape across the belly and hips at low waist.

Straight: small or no waistband, worn at natural or low waist, with tops that hit high hip (a longer line is created that way).

What Body type As should look for in their skirts:

Fluid fabrics, that can drape but not cling (lightweight knits, for instance, would cling), or firm, but not stiff. Matt, not shiny.

Hemmed to knee length, or just above the ankle for medium height to tall women.

Detailing should be avoided. Anything creating a focus of attention is best reserved for her tops. That means no appliqués (unless tonal, or in the same colour, or few, or placed diagonally, if you insist on them), horizontal or oversized patterns.

Monochromatic or tonal color combinations to create a balanced silhouette.

Other names for Body type As are: inverted triangle, pear shape, or A shape.
This outfit creates an unbroken line from head to toe through a tonal combination of colours. The circle skirt in a fluid fabric is visually light, so it does not add volume to a Body type A's lower body. Additionally, all detailing and accessories are concentrated on the upper body, including the envelope purse, worn under the arm.

Although there is a plaid in the skirt, it is very subtle and helps to draw the line up and down, towards the polka dot top and the boots.

To make their waist the focal point and keep their body line long.

The way to achieve Body Type Bs ideal is...

Choosing monochromatic and tonal colour combinations.

With silhouettes that highlight their waist, worn at knee length, among others.

Going for soft fabrics with drape that skim over their curves.

Avoiding hiding their natural contours.

STRAPLESS. Choose one with a defined waist, and either a pencil or circle skirt. Strapless dresses can be hard to wear because strapless bras are uncomfortable, there's no denying it, so you are better served choosing a dress with support built-in, or boning, or both, if your bust is very full.
A slight dip on the front is more flattering than a straight line for most people. For the same reason, a necklace is the best accessory for a strapless dress, although not a choker, because it creates a second horizontal line in the torso.

Styling tips for Body type Bs dresses

Remember, the general idea is to skim over a Body type B's curves and show off her legs, so she should:

Hem dresses at knee length to elongate the line of the body.

Avoid fabrics that either hide her curves, add bulk, or cling. Choose instead fabrics that drape: cotton and cotton voile, washed silk, jersey (in silk or wool), or draped light-weight wools.

Highlight her waist. Anything that hides a Body type B's waist will give her a boxy line. Dresses should be either nipped-in at the waist with darts or have them altered by a tailor to achieve it.

Choose solids or all over small or medium prints, in tonal colours and evenly spaced. Solid dresses in simple silhouettes can look severe, especially if the colour is dark, so accessorizing is a must. Strategic colour blocking can help with the silhouette (highlighting the waist or creating vertical lines that are slimming).

Choose minimun detailing over her bust that would add volume and/or texture, like breast pockets, pleating, ruffles, because it can make the upper body look too busy. In general, the fuller a Body type B's bust is, the less detailing should she choose there.

Choose the right underwear under dresses, so her bra doesn't show when she moves and she gets no VPLs, so she should check that she has it before buying any dress or buy them together. Double check in the case of dresses for work, front and back, standing before the mirror.

Part 2

What to look for:

Fluid fabrics, that drape, but not stiff or firm: silk, lightweight wools. The idea is to skim their curves, neither accentuating them (they decide the context for that), nor hiding them).

Construction: clean lines that, again, skim their curves. Darts to ease full hips.

Monochromatic or tonal color combinations to create a longer, leaner silhouette.

Hemmed at knee length, to show off shapely legs.

Their waist must be always the focal point: never forgo shaping at the waist with a sash, obi or cummerbound (contoured) belt.

What to avoid:

Although when Body type Bs put on weight, they do it all round, they should pay special attention to:

Cut on the bias pieces (diagonally cut) in narrow silhouettes that will accentuate any weight carried on the thighs. It's not a matter of loosing a bit of weight, ladies, the skirt will stick to your saddlebags, if any, ALWAYS. Opt instead for an A-line or circle cut to get the benefits of a bias cut (softly adapting to your curves, a lot of movement and fluidity) and none of the disadvantages.

Excessive material at the waist or around the hips, like in a dirdl, or any pleats in medium to thick wools or in thin wools not stiched down to the low hip, or flounces.

Thick materials like bouclé or mohair wool, that create unwanted additional volume.

Open darts. These are NOT flattering for curvy bodies because they add unnecessary volume on the lower body, when it is essentially well balanced with the upper body.

In particular
Petites:

Watch out for proportions: high-waisted items will make your torso look excessively short, unless you pair it with a slash-, boat- turtle-necks.

Combining a busy bottom with a busy top, because we are looking to create an AUL.

Full skirts and excessive fabric add volume and detract from your height.

Tall:

Tiered and horizontal detailing breaks up the line of your silhouette.

Strategic colour blocking that creates horizontal lines, not vertical.

H&M, the Scandinavian retail giant

Travelling around Europe, you quickly get the impression that there is an H&M almost around every corner of every city, be it small or big. The impression is right: H&M is actually the second largest global clothing retailer, just behind Inditex, Zara's parent company. It is present in 61 countries with over 3900 shops, and employs around 132,000 people.
In Scandinavia, the presence of H&M is even more evident. That is so because H&M (original name, Hennes & Mauritz) is a Swedish company and because it owns not just H&M, but additional brands COS, and & other stories, among others.

A friendly giant ? Living wages and sustainability

We are unfortunately familiar with tragedies in the garment industry in emerging economies. That is not good PR, and companies that were quite happy with turning a blind eye about conditions and wages among their suppliers in poor countries, started to rethink that strategy.
H&M's efforts towards "friendliness" in the form of decent working conditions really took off in 2012, after outrageous tragedies in Cambodia. Then, the company published a near-complete list of the factories that supply its garments. This transparency is laudable, as makes possible to check working conditions at their factories, something most brands do not offer.
Additionally, the company committed in 2013 to pay all textile workers a "living wage" by 2018. They have made other commitments, like implementing a garment collection scheme or aiming at more environmentally friendly products, but those strategies are still to be fully realized or their impact to be evaluated to be considered positive. It is true that there are those products, but they are only a small percentage of the total, and the company stresses above all fast and repeated consumption of cheaply made items that will not last. No recycling campaign can keep up with that.
I like to think of my blog as encouraging responsible consumption of well made garments, investments that will be enjoyed for years, so I approach H&M exclusively as a source for very specific, very carefully chosen, items.

PROs and CONs of shopping at H&M

I talked some weeks ago about H&M as fast fashion retailer and how you can get the same for less there if you keep an eye of their frequent stock updates.

PROs

Democratic sizing. although their Plus collection is often of the lowest quality.

Up-to-date silhouettes and colours. This is a double-edged sword: it can update your wardrobe instantly but it goes without saying, not everything will flatter you.

Some good-fitting jackets, really well cut, but only very few are made of something other than polyester.

Some eco-minded products.

High fashion collaborations that result in some very special pieces. Their Balmain and Louboutin collaborations have been especially reknown, although I am afraid I have never got to see any of the items "in the flesh", as people queue in front of the shops before opening hours and all items disappear first thing in the morning... the first morning!... And I do not queue for clothes.

A Premium collection at really good prices, well made and in lasting materials. These are the pieces I always check first.

I have included two options for shoes: a pair of pink coral walking shoes by Ecco and a pair of khaki sandals from Clarks US.
CONs

Their business model. As I mentioned above, H&M is a fast fashion emporium and does not really produce those basic pieces that are the cornerstone of any grown woman's wardrobe: a good quality black/navy tailored something. When they do (their Suiting, they are mostly 100% polyester. A young woman at an entry level position may get away with their best pieces if she takes good care of them so they look impeccable for maybe some months, but that is about it.

It's a nightmare to find something in the shop. The overabundance of products makes it hard to locate a specific item, and that they change the location of EVERYTHING every week makes it even worse. I ask a shop assistant whenever possible and always check first on their web page.

Client service is generally OK and sale assistants - when and if you find one - try their best to locate products, but sometimes they themselves seem to be overwhelmed by the fast pace.

A not easy to navigate web page, with filters that are next to useless. The stock in the website is different from the one online.

Ordering online does not include collecting in-shop, as Zara does, or returning there.

Overabundance of low quality materials: polyester reigns in H&M, and not the recycled type.

Jerseys have the expiration date of fresh milk, both material and dyes.

Conclusion

If you are on a budget, H&M is the place for you, but you will need to invest some time to get something worthwhile there. On the other hand, any good purchase you make will make you proud!

Always check first online so you know what you are looking for. Then check with reality, as surprises go both ways (for better, for worse) with this shop.

Choose carefully, considering quality, longevity and sustainability.

Consider the possibility of personalizing through changing belts, buttons, etc. for a more upscale look.

Good luck hunting there!

Enjoy!

Tops:

Bright, happy colours, white, and striped T-shirts with or without nautical embellishments (buttons with anchors, etc.) are a classic combination with sailor trousers, which are usually navy, white, red, or white.

With sleeves to achieved a balance between upper and lower body (unless you have narrow hips), either short or three-quarter length.

Should hit you at high hip, and so should any cardigan you wear, as you run the risk of losing all shape if you don't stick to that.

To tuck or not to tuck. This really depends on how wide your top and leg trousers are in relation to each other, and the length of the top. In general, I wear my fitted tees, blouses, and knit tops tucked in.

Shoes:

Go for substantial flats (not your average "I'm really walking straight on the floor" pair, but rather one with a proper sole: better for your back, I promise), pointy ballerinas or loafers for a relaxed style.

Heels with a wedge or a platform look great with sailor trousers, but you can go with more polished styles, as in the sets I have created.

Styling tips for sailor trousers

Last week I introduced a new TRL style essential: the sailor trouser. Sailor trousers offer timeless style and they are revisited every few years by designers, as is the whole nautical idea behind them.I'd like to go over now some styling tips for different body types.
Sailor pants can very well be every working woman's staple, so it can be a good idea stock up on them whenever they are fashionable. I often buy two pairs of the same trousers in the best quality I can afford: one pair hemmed for heels, one for flats.
What to look for?

A straight or slightly flared leg is most people's best choice, cut mid to wide width. Remember that your best leg width depends on how tall you are, because wider trousers legs will make you look shorter. They should fall loose from the widest part of your hips.

A double row of buttons is good tummy camouflage, just check that they are not placed very low.

A crease will always elongate your legs. Keep it sharp through ironing (through a cotton cloth, of course, to avoid unpleasant shine).

Hem wide sailor pants (or, for that matter, any long, flared pair) 1/2-1" from the floor when wearing the shoes you will be using.

Styling tips for Body Types:

If the pair you find needs to be taken in at the waist, just go ahead and choose a pair that fits your hips and have a professional deal with the rest.

Body Type A: Choose ones that are not at waist level but one inch or two below it so they don't accentuate the difference between your hips and your upper body. Keep in mind that very low rise trousers will make your hips look wider too.

Body Type B: A pair of sailor trousers with a high waist will make your legs look longer. Look for a pair that places the buttons over your stomach and not your hips.

Body Type C: You can wear any style of trousers, so sailor trousers are for you too.

A bit of history
At the beginning of the 19th century most genteel trousers reached the knee and had a flap in front called a "fall front"could be held in place by two or three buttons at the top or at the sides that could be easily undone when nature called.. As no belts were worn, trousers (then also breeches or pantaloons) were held up by tight-fitting waists, adjusted at the back by gusset ties. Seats were baggy to allow a man to sit and rise comfortably.
In the case of American sailors, their trousers were not knee-length, but long and bell-bottomed. Nobody is absolutely sure of the origin of the cut, although it is suggested that the idea was to set sailors apart from civilians before the introduction of uniform regulations. In any case, it had the benefit of keeping trouser legs dry after they were rolled up above the knees during shipboard duties.
In the second half of the 19th century, crackerjack trousers were help up by buttons that replaced the previous string tie at the waist and had the flap, or "broadfall", held in place by seven additionally - and easily replaced - buttons. In the final years of the century, six buttons were added to the flap, resulting in a symmetrical design that allowed answering the calls of nature and prevented the the unwanted unveiling of the wearer.
This post first appeared on The Red Lipstick: Own Your Style, on March 25, 2016.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8593523790085629458.post-69281183049011568832016-03-19T12:46:00.003+01:002016-03-23T11:47:14.295+01:00High fashion at affordable prices: H&M and ZaraIn the past, I have tended to ignore fast fashion shops altogether. The image of the brands is often definitely young and the shops are not attractive, as they are so cluttered (H&M) or plain messy (Zara) that it seems impossible to find anything worth your while.
However, it is SO very affordable and, at the end of the day, the difference in quality not that big with the other brands I could afford, I decided to go back to them when I moved to Denmark. Also, in the case of H&M, I need to add as a reason to shop again their campaigns around more sustainable fashion.

Fast fashion or the same for less: H&M and Zara

Some high street chains are specialists in quickly translating runway fashion into affordable fashion. H&M is one of those brands, together with Zara. These capability is probably the main reason for their success. Also, their ability to constantly bring new stuff to the shops gives them an "entertainment value" for those of us with the time to browse. Moreover, their translation of high fashion looks is often uncanny, and only a few discerning ones can tell the difference.
The truth is that, nowadays, only the greats continue to offer amazing quality and craftsmanship (say Valentino or Chanel) that make every piece a work of art. Everybody else, and that especially goes for bridge collections - those between high fashion and high street fashion -, often offer very little that sets them apart from big retailers like H&M and Zara: synthetic materials in unexpected places - a shoe lining that will make your feet sweat and blister, or a polyester lining in a silk dress that will stick to your legs when you move - uneven hems, glued-to instead of sewn hems, jerseys that get holes the third time you put the garment on... You know what I'm taking about, right?

Insider secret: mixing high and low

Fashion insiders actually pride themselves of their finds in high fashion retail and mix it. Examples this "high and low" mixing, i.e. wearing an H&M dress with a pair of Valentino shoes bought on sale (or not) and a Radley handbag with Étoile by Isabel Marant coat.
It is what I do, minus the Valentino anything. What about doing it yourself?

Let's see some examples of the same look for less.
To begin with, denim is a cotton fabric, usually complemented with lycra or similar elastic components in trousers, but not in dresses. In this case, MK's dress contains ramie, which gives the fabric a certain sheen. However, ramie does not tolerate washing very well and loses body and shine very fast. Accordingly, they recommend dry cleaning but, frankly, that is bonkers for denim. Cut and finishings (buttons, seams, etc.) can be the reason for an elevation in price, of course. It's been now a year and a half since I wrote to you about taking a break from the blog. It has been an extremely busy year, learning Danish intensively (over 20 hours a week!), but I have been very happy, and the tiredness and the stress of the former period (moving to Sweden, then to France, then to Denmark), has slowly melted away.
I'm in love with Copenhagen, biking everywhere and even enjoying the rain (not the darkness and grey month of November, that is just not possible). I expect Denmark to be my adopted country, to settle down here, develop as a person and grow roots.
Lately I have felt my creativity coming back, together with fashion inspiration and the love for all things related to style. I have felt like writing again. That, and the sense from readers that the blog was useful and informative, have decided me to start posting for TRL again.
I am going to post once a week for a period, while I get a sense of the direction I want to take with the blog in the medium run*. I will not be offering colour counselling, but I will try to make the posts about seasons better and clearer, so you do not need it ;).
That means you can still expect some Style DOs and DONTs, HOW TOs, and the like, but probably much more of my Scandi-findings which, believe me, are many, and style posts related to the my new life, which includes being stylish but practical while on a bike, wearing a helmet, and being prepared for the wind and the rain. I hope my readers still find this new phase fun and informative.
Last but not least, I want to thank the readers that have reached out and wished me well, they are an important reason for being back.

Love to all,

Caroline

*At this moment, TRL is a bit in disarray, as I have reverted some things to draft and some links may not work for some time. Bear with me while I try to fix it.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8593523790085629458.post-77920206111892498042014-06-05T16:47:00.000+02:002016-01-27T18:51:02.872+01:00So long dear readersDear readers,
I have decided to drop you all a line to communicate that I am going to stop writing this blog for at least a while.
We are moving again at the end of the month, this time to Copenhagen. I have lived in four different countries in the last three years and although it probably sounds very glamorous, the truth is that it is exhausting. Life in Paris has been quite stressful (read also "very expensive indeed") and French bureaucracy Kafkaesque. The city is indeed lovely beyond description, but not a sane place to live.
I have endeavoured to write the blog in an informative and rigorous way, keeping it as far as possible from the overwhelming majority of the messages aimed at women nowadays. I have been fortunate enough to come in contact with some lovely ladies whose comments and communication I have enjoyed immensely.
When things have quieted down I would like very much to return to writing for the blog, but I have no idea about when that will be.

Love to all,
Caroline
They were always placed on top of some sort of red velvety material, and Majorica's red and gold banner was always prominent. My mother, of course, was interested in pearls, as any self-respecting Spanish woman of a certain age had to be, so she owned some cultured pearls and some Majorica ones. Buying pearls was then considered a true investment, and a possible heirloom for the family.
If real pearls or even cultured ones are as out of your reach as they are of mine, these are a great faux option.

Vintage Majorica ads. Majorica pearls have been for decades at the top of the simulated beads market, next to Pearlfection. Both brands are collected by costume jewellery fans.

What are Majorica Pearls
Majorica pearls (not to be confused with Majorca pearls) are high-quality faux pearls produced in a small factory in the Balearic Islands in Spain, in the town of Majorica. They are faux because they are man-made in a factory. To be more precise, they are, and have always been, "woman-made". What probably started because female labour was cheaper than male's (it still is, but we are not going there now), is now probably a tradition. They use solid glass beads as nuclei for the pearls that are then coated with multiple lacquer layers (much as a cinnabar object would be), using what is known in the trade as essence d'orient or pearlessence. They keep the secret of their pearlessence formula zealously, obviously.
Majorica pearls look and feel real or, at the very least, expensive. Apart from their more conservative models (ie. regular pearls in expected colours, frequently in matching sets), which are a bit boring, they have started producing edgier ones, usually either with gold-plated, or in silver or rhodium findings. Slightly more than half of their products are still sold in Spain, although many to tourists, and the rest in the USA. For instance, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue both carry them.
Tell me if they do not all look wonderful in the photo on the right!

DOs

Choose a colour that flatters you. Those that are fair will look better in dark blue or a rich brown than in black.

Forget about the size tag. The important thing is how the swimsuit looks and feels on you. Consider that separates may adjust to your needs better than a one-piece suit.

Look for the right amount of support.

Avoid too much exposure, you may want to leave something to the imagination.

Avoid too much coverage, you may not want to look ancient either. Full-on coverage will make your butt look bigger, go for a bit of cheek better.

Let the activity dictate the suit: if you are going to be active -dive, swim or play with children or do any sports-, a one-piece suit will be your best bet, because even bikinis that look secure will move and even fall off. If, on the contrary, you are going to be lounging by the pool, you can go for strictly "parade" pieces.

Go for a brand you trust.

Specifically:

Tops
SUPPORT is the key word here. Check the side and front view to see that you are getting it. Center and aligned is what you are going for. This means that:

String bikinis are only for self-supporting breasts.

Sizable straps are a must for cups D and above. Tie-yourself halters that offer full coverage or a racer back are also good.

The bottom band needs to be wide and somewhat firm.

Bottoms

Coverage: enough that there is no side or rear exposure.

A high-cut leg opening at the widest part of the hip will make your legs look longer and slimmer, as it will create an upward angle.

A low-rise waist will add curves to narrow hips and minimize wider ones.

Go for a customized fit: a tie-it-yourself will let you adjust your suit to your needs, and so will separates in different sizes, if that is what you need.

DONTs

Let your breasts spill out or point south or east and west.

Flatten your breasts or create a uniboob.

Wedgies: always a NO.

Bottoms hitched up high so they dig in front and back. Ouch!

High rises: the higher the rise of the bottom, the bigger the difference between the waist and the high and lower hip for those with saddlebags. A high rise will round up your belly and make it more visible, while a medium to low rise (but not extremely low: your belly will hang out) will create a horizontal line that will divide the space visually.

In general, boyshorts: they cut the leg straight across instead rather than at an upward angle. They only work on the narrowest figures.

My mother, for instance, has had a lifelong love relationship with hers. She does not own any real pearls, obviously, but rather some cultured pearls, and some good quality costume ones that she takes good care of, storing them in individual velvety sachets.
Until the last decade or so, when massive competition from Asian markets started, buying pearls (a single real one on a ring, perhaps, or a necklace of cultivated ones) was considered a true investment, and a possible heirloom for the family.

What makes a good costume pearl
The best costume pearls use solid glass beads as nuclei which is, the best thing you can use to make faux pearls, as it gives the item the right weight and feeling of authenticity (as good quality faux pearls, that is). I always weigh faux pearls in my hand before deciding on a purchase. Light is bad, substantial good.
The glass beads are coated with multiple lacquer layers (much as a red lacquer or cinnabar object would be), using what is known in the trade as essence d'orient or pearlessence, a high-quality lacquer that does for faux pearls what scales do for fish: reflect different light wavelengths, and create an iridescent look.
Each manufacturer keeps the secret of their pearlessence formula zealously, obviously. Two famed brands are Majorica and Mikimoto.

Classic lengths and beyond
Pearls are very versatile, and can be worn in many different ways.
Classic lengths are:

Choker 16"

Princess 18"

Matinée 22-24"

Opera 30-32"

A way of updating your traditional lengths is mixing them with others in different sizes and lengths.
Pearls can also be funky and edgy, especially baroque ones in unexpected colours. Think about your season palette before choosing yours and remember that, if you go with white, there is a right white for each season: bright white for Deep Winters, ivory for Deep Autumns, etc.

That narrowness means that they need a vent or slit at the back (less commonly at the sides) or a pleat, to allow movement.
I often see straight skirts and even A-line skirts announced as pencil skirts, but the silhouette they create is completely different, much more body-conscious, even curvaceous.
Pencil skirts are absolute style essential for Body type Bs and Cs, while Body type As will benefit more from choosing a straight or slight A-line skirt (See below).

Pencil Skirt by Caroline Grant. White on top and bottom creates an AUL and makes the emerald green shine.
A thin belt could be added to the skirt, but rather tone on tone: you already have a necklace on.
The flounces over the shoulders in the blouse are discreet enough for those with wide shoulders, although they will not be the most flattering for people who carry weight on the upper arms. The slight vertical line does not add volume and at the same time compensates for the high waist in terms of giving a longer length to the torso.
The black and white necklace makes the accessory less predictable or matchy-matchy than other options (metallic or white).

L'WREN SCOTT High-Waisted Pencil Skirt / Green Falbala Round Neck Puff Sleeve Chiffon Top / Reiss Liotta Stitch Detail Leather Jacket / Nine West Women's Kimery Dress Pump Shoes / Caroline Charles Handbag / Monies NecklaceKate Spade New York Stud Earrings / River Island Paper Braid Fedora Hat / Tom Ford Lipstick in Scarlet Rouge / Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Carnal Red.

Styling tips for Body type B
The ideal for Body type Bs when dressing is to make their waist the focal point. Also, they will look their best not hiding their natural contours and keeping their body line long (optimally, by using monochromatic and tonal colour combinations).
Pencil skirts are actually Body type Bs best bet in skirts, with some requirements:

No waistband or a small contoured one (a straight waistband will stick out) hitting at natural waist.

A high-waisted style with no waistband or one you can add a thin belt to, but taking care not to make the torso look shorter: choose a crew , ballerina or boat neckline top instead of a V or U neckline. Check your proportions in the mirror!

Worn at knee length, just below or just above.

Medium-weight fabrics with drape that skim over their curves. Light-weight fabrics will show everything underneath, so take that into account when choosing underwear (full coverage is the best option). Heavy weight materials will add volume, so proceed with care.

Slightly tapered at the hem to keep the curvy (as opposed to creating a straight line) silhouette.

Always choose a back slit skirt. Check that it does not go too further up and reveal everything when you lean forwards.

Styling tips for Body type Cs
One of the tips to achieve Body type C's best silhouette is to create definition at the waist and elongating their torso, especially if they are short-waisted or carry a significant amount of weight there. The second is to soften their shoulder line.
Pencil skirts can help with that if you choose one with a cut and pattern that help create the illusion of a balanced, curvier silhouette.
That means:

A style that can be worn at the low waist.

No waistband.

Fabrics in any weight, although clingy ones may reveal too much and make your bottom flat. In contrast with Body type Bs, a bouclé wool would be a good option for them.

A hem hitting just below the knee to accentuate your legs.

A slightly tapered hemline (to maintain the illusion of a curvier silhouette).

Styling tips for Body type A
Their best option is not a pencil skirt but a straight one with a small or no waistband, worn at natural or low waist. A top hitting at high hip, will help creating a longer body line.

1st Rule: Last on, first off. This means your pearls should be the last thing you put on, after any cosmetic product and perfume has been absorbed or dried. At the end of the day, you take them off first.

2nd Rule: Follow the manufacturer's care tips. These tips usually include: storing them in their case, separated from other jewels and metallic pieces, so they don't get scratched, and instructions for cleaning (no chemical or abrasive products, or perfumed soaps, or ultra-sound!). Also, if you do not follow them you will most probably not be covered by their warranty. In the absence of manufacturer's instructions of care, wash them only using warm water and a PH-neutral soap. Leave them spread out on a soft cloth for at least two days in order to allow the thread to dry properly.

3rd Rule: Check the knots and thread. Have them professionally restrung when needed (depending on use) or every decade or so.

Very much like Mme Chanel, she is responsible for creating in 1974 an iconic piece, the wrap dress, in a comfortable fabric. By 1976 she had sold over a million of her signature dresses and landed on the cover of The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek.
Her wrap jersey silk dresses are just beautiful. I saw my first one while having a picnic in Central Park, near Columbus Circle in New York, on a girl out for lunch. I thought the dress was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and have coveted one ever since. In the meanwhile, I make do with my silk jersey L.K. Bennett one (no collar or cuffs) and my several great viscose Hobbs ones (with collar and cuffs), all bought on eBay.

The Essentials

Good stitching: not crooked and not becoming undone in places.

A straight hem hitting just below the knee will always be fashionable.

Look for ssophisticated construction details like a collar and cuffs.

Self-tie belt.

Choose a great material: avoid clingy jerseys in cotton, modal or viscose or artificial fibres and go for wool, silk or similar-quality materials, like a thick viscose.

This is a DVF (as her brand is more commonly known) Jeanne dress: silk jersey, A-line cut with collar and cuffs. The Julian wrap is another iconic model, more straight and less A-line, and with no collar. Sizing is American in her dresses (US 6 is UK10, US8 is UK12).

Styling tips for wrap dresses
These dresses are the epitome of demure sexy. Be careful not to overdo it. Unless you want to.
Choose:

A print size that is right for your size and height (tall ladies should avoid minute prints, and petites gigantic ones... you get my drift).

A solid in a flattering colour. Go for your best neutral if this is your first (or only) expensive wrap dress. That means black, gray, brown or blue for most people.

The right underpinnings: even good quality jerseys can reveal everything underneath. Your bra straps should not be visible from any angle and your underwear should not dig in. High waisted tights can come handy here. If modesty is an issue, go for a camisole.

In general, go for closed-toe shoes, (sandals look weird with long sleeves: reserve them for short-sleeved dresses). Flats are difficult to wear with dresses unless you are tall and slender so, if comfort is not your priority (or a necessity) go for kitten to high-heeled shoes. Boots should reach the hem of the dress if your legs are not your strong point or if you mean to achieve a long unbroken line.
